Progress of My Digipak

Initial Idea

The theme for my Digipak will be blue and pink. But also to include the recognisable things that feature in The 1975's previous work.

The front outside cover of my Digipak will be a medium shot of an almost androgynous male (the same man to feature in the video) lit by light blue lights on one side and pink on the other. I will add the famous rectangle around the man by copying the exact scale by tracing it from other 1975 productions. The reverse of the outside cover will not feature anything but a plain white or black background with the name of the band on the top of the in the contrasting colour.

The left hand side inside cover will be plain white with the name of the song in pastel pink at the centre top of the cover, with the lyrics of the song also down the centre in black.

Artist Research: The 1975

The Background

The 1975, formerly known under the names: Me and You Versus Them, Forever Enjoying Sex, Talkhouse, The Slowdown, Bigsleep and Drive Like I do, formed in 2002, Cheshire, England. They formed when they were 13 at their local school. Now they are around 27 years old - which is older than the majority of their fans. When they first begun under the name of The 1975 they were first described as being an Indie Rock band. But throughout the 14 years they have been together they have produced music progressing from Indie Rock to Electro Pop to Alternative Rock. Their first EP 'Facedown' was released in 2012 by the record company Dirty Hit, containing the songs Facedown, The City, Antichrist and Woman. This EP has a melancholic feel to it with the songs heavily referencing religion and relationships. Later that year they released the 'Sex' EP, this was the EP that started their rise in popularity in the music industry as the Alternative Rock song 'Sex' supported by Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe and pushed them towards a UK and Ireland tour. The following year saw the release of their third EP 'Music For Cars' this is where their mainstream success and potential became apparent. The song 'Chocolate' reached number 19 in the UK Singles Chart. Also in 2013, was their second EP of the year and fourth EP altogether 'IV'. 'IV' had a new version of a popular song 'The City'. This emphasises the band's awareness of the demand from their fans while also defining the creativity that they are still known for today.  The track charted in the UK and had airtime in many other countries. However this was their last EP before the release of their self titled debut album 'The 1975'. The album was released on the 2nd of September 2013, the re-worked lead single 'Sex' from the previous EP was released a week before as part of the hype for the album. The song was an instant hit and again was supported by Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, furthermore the band's first music video was released on the 26th of July for 'Sex'. Their debut album reached number 1 in the UK Album Charts. The album was very much Indie Rock/Alternative Rock and had a lack of Pop influences.

Obviously I do not have the budget or the time to get any actual neon lighting as marketing for my music video but I could at least take advantage of the natural locations in my town and take a high quality photo on the Cow and Calf or on the moors. With this I can then add neon text to attempt to replicate a similar style to this.

When I create the CD case I should also attempt to take inspiration from their single and album covers.

'Music For Cars' EP
'IV' EP
'Medicine' Single EP
'The 1975' Album Cover
'ILIWYS' Album Cover

My CD case is going to be similar to the most recent album cover (the bottom one) in the sense that its going to be all white but I want it to feature a male defying stereotypes. Possibly sticking with the pink theme. But most importantly, I will feature the famous rectangle in the centre of the shot.

Official Hoodie

Official T-Shirt

Official Vests

A reoccurring theme of their merchandise as well as album covers are the rectangles again but also the font of their band name. This could be used within my CD cover as well.

My Music Video Idea

Menswear - The 1975

My idea for a music video will be a literal narrative video based upon the meaning of the song Menswear by the Indie band The 1975. Menswear is about the lead singer Matty Healy at his best friend's wedding. The song suggests that they are at the wedding reception and there is a lot of drinking. They lyrics start off with the Matty telling someone that he 'only brought 3' here is referring to cocaine. This is anchored by a following lyric, 'proceeding railing racket off of a porcelain basin' this is referring to Matty sneaking off to snort cocaine off the sink in the bathroom. Because of this I am going to have a couple of shots of the main character doing drugs in a bathroom. The bathroom I will use will hopefully be the Craigland Hotel bathrooms, however I will need to get into contact with them. The opening shot of the video will be the main character passed out on a street, this will be the same shot as the final shot of the video. The song goes 1:44 before any lyrics appear in the song, in this first section I am going to have the events displayed or the aftermath of the events displayed in the lyrics in reverse and slow motion in parts, much like Alt-J's Breezeblocks video.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rVeMiVU77wo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

In the reverse, slow motion section, it will be in black and white and an increase in light in time with the electronic drum beat. During the lyrics, I am going to have the literal meaning of the lyrics acted out and some of the lyrics lip-synched into the camera lens. Also, during the lyrics it will be in colour but with the red and blue colours emphasised, this is seen in another 1975 video, Somebody Else.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Bimd2nZirT4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The actual wedding reception will hopefully be set up in the hall of my school. As they have a large space with round tables that can easily be set out with balloons and other decorations to make it look as if it is an actual wedding reception. But once again I will need to make sure the space is available to use and the props are available.

Music Video Analysis 5: Stressed Out - Twenty One Pilots

Stressed Out - TØP (Mark C. Eshleman) 2015

The music video 'Stressed Out' has a connection between the lyrics and the visuals throughout the music video with certain shots  having a direct link to what is seen on screen, while having this link it also features a lot of performance from the band. In the chorus of the song the lyrics say 'Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol' days, Whenever these lyrics are sung in the chorus the visuals will link, they link by showing stereotypical activities that were done when you were a child, things that are acceptable to do as a child. These are some examples:

In this shot the artist is riding a tricycle, riding a tricycle is stereotypically a childs activity which is linking back to the lyrics that they wish they could go back to their childhood and relive activities from their past, when they didn't have to care about anything but playing out in the street.

Here they are doing a long handshake which is something children do as a greeting when they meet.

They are sat on the pavement drinking juice which is another children's activity.

The band are in a bedroom playing music which is something that they most likely did for fun when they were children.

All these things are activities which are done when you're a child, when you didn't have any worries, this links to the lyrics 'now we're stressed out' because they are no longer playing games with no worries they are now adults living a life which has lots of responsibility which has caused him to become stressed. The artist is clearly not happy and would prefer if they go back to when they were not stressed again linking to the lyrics 'wish we could turn back time'. The whole idea of the song is about how he wishes he could go back to when he was younger because things in his life are a lot harder now and the music video links to this and keeps reminding the audience of this meaning throughout the video

This music video doesn't follow genre characteristics, the genre of music in this video is pop. Pop music videos are usually bright bold and colourful, they usually feature lots of dancing and performance. In this video it is mainly dull and boring colours not like pop videos which are very colourful this is more sad, this is not following the usual characteristics of a pop music video. It is also not very fast paced which is often the case for pop music videos and the amount of performance isn't has much as which would feature in a normal pop characteristics.

Stereotypical Pop Music Video

Stressed Out

There is a little bit of performance involved in this music video but it is different to a usual performance, it is less professional because they are performing in a bedroom with just a drum kit and a mic. Throughout the video the artist is singing a lot at different parts but he is just singing so the performance is very stripped back.

Shot Types:

In the music video for stressed out there is a variety if shot types used, a lot of the shot types are usually repeated throughout the video, here are some examples:
Long Shot
 Mid Shot
 Over the shoulder
 Two Shot
 Medium Close up Shot
 Wide Shot
Close Up Shot

In this video there is references to 'looking' this is when the singer directly looks into the camera lens, this happens in Close Up style shots, doing this can create a sense of direct connection with the audience. Linking to this is the use of star treatment, the singer is singled out in a lot of the shots used, this is done with many shot types and the editing will keep returning to shots of this person.

Pace:

The pace of the video changes appropriately throughout the video. The video is edited to fit the change in music, for example when it is the verse the shot change will be slow and shots will last a long time on screen but when the song reaches the chorus this changes and the shots change a lot quicker fitting the pace of the music, this then repeats when the song goes to another verse.

Mise-en-Scene:

Looking at the mise-en-scene the video includes a lot of red the video is discreet places such as all the cars in the background are all red. The colour red links to the colour of the band, the colour red also appears on the clothing of the artists, this is to remind the audience who they re watching and listenig to when they are looking at the video.

Music Video Analysis 4: Thriller - Michael Jackson

Thriller - Michael Jackson (John Landis) 1983

The relationship between visuals and lyrics

In the music video for thriller there is a direct connection between the lyrics and visuals, it is a mix between a concept video and performance, it tends to switch between the two. The visuals and lyrics do link directly for example 'Its close to midnight, and something evils lurking in the dark' as this lyric is sung the visuals match it because it is at nigh and the scene looks very spooky. All together the visuals and lyrics constantly link together which means the audience can understand what is going on in the video easily and can follow the story without struggling.

Intertextuality

There isn't a huge amount of intertextuality in this music video but it does link to the cinema, film and horror films. The video switches from a movie to then the audience watching people watch a movie. It links to film culture and horror films, the music video shows a snippet of a horror film which the main characters are watching at the start of the video. This is referencing the horror film culture.

Performance:

In this music video there is a mix of performance and concept and it switches between the two throughout the video, because the video is not just music and a lot of it is concept there is about an equal balance between the two. The performance part of the video is very good, the artist is portrayed as the main character and the lead role, the whole performance is around him. It is a lot different from a common performance meanig there is no band just normally playing. The performance is linked into the concept and is threaded through instead of the performance section being a completely different shot and scene eg the woman is being chased by zombies in the story but then they change to the zombies dancing.

Part of the Story (Being chased by zombies)
 Performance ( Zombies dancing)

There is a lot of dancing done in this music video, the dancing is done very well and instead of it just being normal dancing, it is done in a very unique way with a specialized dance which became iconic. During the performance there are many shot types used for example wise shots, long shots and close up shots. The dancing was very organised and choreographed well and clearly had a lot of time spent into making it perfect.

Narrative

There is a clear narrative in this music video, the director clearly wanted to make the narrative easy to follow so the audience didn't struggle when watching and just enjoyed, this is why they included the start and last bit to add more of a story and make the video not just the music. There is narrative closure and the story ends meaning the audience have closure on the plot.

Mode of address/Star treatment:

There are moments in the music video when characters look into the camera, this doesn't seem to be done to address the audience or tell them anything, it is simply just done for the effect. At the end of the video there is an iconic stand out point when the main character turns their head and looks straight into the camera, this creates an effect of cliffhanger because it makes the audience ask more questions and think more about the story of the video. There is a clear use of star treatment used in the thriller video. The star is singled out very obviously and it is made obvious to the audience who the main character is. This is done by the editing, there are mainly more shots which include the main character then the other character and the shots keep returning to Michael to make the audience understand who is the most important to follow.

Example of mode of address

Pace

The pace of the video is more or less the same speed throughout the majority of the video. Each shot usually has the same amount of time on screen, there aren't any really long shots or really quick shots until the chorus of the song. At some points in the chorus there is a change in pace and it it speeds up with faster shot changes and more shot variety.

Shot Variety

There is a lot of shot variety used in this music video, every shot type is used more than once, in just the opening minute most of the different shot types are used. Below are some examples of the different shot types used.
Close Up

Medium Close Up

Close Up

Extreme Close Up
 Wide Shot
 Long Shot
 Extreme Wide/Long Shot

Mise-en-scene/location:

The mise-en-scene and location was clearly very carefully though about when making this music video and it is also very important, if it was not done correctly the director wouldn't have been able to create the same spooky effect and impact the audience as much as it did.

Music Video Analysis 3: Girls - The 1975

Girls - The 1975 (Adam Powell) 2013

This video is an intentionally ironic video that was made by the band following accusations from their fans in light of one of their recent music videos 'Sex'. The video contained colour for the first time and therefore the fans believed that the band were beginning to 'conform to a record company's wishes' and other clichés surrounding music videos. A quote from lead singer Matty Healy being that they "made a video about us not wanting to make a video". The band and director have been influenced by the 80's as can be heard in the music and also in the fashion of the models and some of the setups. It begins by the band ironically exclaiming that they are not a pop band and therefore can not have colour in their videos (conventionally Rock bands have a lot of black and white videos). Progressively, the video adds in more and more conventions of a Pop video. For example, there are models being objectified, there is a lot of colour and routine dancing. All of the video is just the conventions of a Pop music video.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:

There isn't much relationship between the visuals and the lyrics in this video. It is more based on the concept of the video. However, the exceptions to this being that the song is called 'Girls' and there are plenty of female models. Secondly, on some lines such as 'she can't be what you need, if she's 17' there is a shot of one of the models blowing out a 17 candle on top of a cupcake.

GENRE CHARACTERISTICS:

As I have mentioned, this is a music video to a Pop song from an Indie Pop Rock band. The first characteristic of a Pop music video would be the simple white background being changed to many colours featuring the band and lead singer on there own performing. Secondly, the use of models. They do not seem to have any purpose other than to look attractive to the male gaze. This seems to be intentional as they have got the models mimicking the instruments and therefore emphasising how Pop videos usually have females in the video for no narrative purpose other than to attract the male audience. Additionally, another characteristic of a Pop music video would be the synchronised dancing. They are not complex dance moves and once again are just an exaggeration of a Pop video.

INTERTEXTUALITY?

It could be suggested that this video is referencing a lot of mainstream media. For example, the models in this video could be compared to dolls in the sense that their movement is very stiff and robot like. Also, they are visually attractive, furthermore, their clothes do not appear to be real but also appear to be close to perfect. This could be because this is how society expects girls to be perfect and this video is almost mocking that concept.

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT?:

The majority of this video is based around the performance of the song as this is the usual convention of a Pop video. But it is also based on the ironic concept of a Rock band making a Pop video.

Music Video Analysis 2: Follow You - Bring Me The Horizon

Follow You - Bring Me The Horizon (Oliver Sykes and Frank Borin, 2016)

'Follow You' is a Hard Rock song released in 2016 as a single from Bring Me The Horizon's fifth album 'Thats The Spirit'. In the video co-directed by lead singer Oliver Sykes and Frank Borin, there are a lot of death that coincide with the references to hell in the lyrics. This is very common in the Hard Rock genre and features prominently in Rock videos such as My Chemical Romance's 'Welcome to the Black Parade' video (directed by Samuel Bayer). The actor in the 'Follow You' video is not from the band, however still follows convention by miming the lyrics in certain parts of the song. The camera tracks the actor throughout the video, however the editing often cuts non-chronologically. This video has clearly had inspirations from Michael Jackson in the sense that it has a main character walking through the street dancing with what seems to be the end of the world around him. Also there are zombie like people in the video which is direct intertextuality to the Horror genre of film, as this video has been described by Emmy Mack from Music Feeds as "The whole thing is a God damn motherfucking horror movie. But at least its a blockbuster one.". No instruments are used in this video, this ma not be conventional for a Rock music video but it does emphasise its similarities to a horror film.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:

In this video there is a very direct link between the lyrics and the visuals. For example, "you can throw me to the flames", throughout this video buildings are presented as being on fire from the acts of violence. Also, "I will follow you 'cause I'm under your spell". The video portrays a character walking through rioting as if everything is fine when in reality it is not. This is band member Oliver Sykes portraying how he feels about love after he left his wife (emphasised by the opening title "love is blind, deaf and fucking dumb"). However, not all of the presentations of the lyrics are literal. It is clearly a fictional story that is based upon reality and presented in a fantasy way where zombies exist.

INTERTEXTUALITY:

There aren't any direct references to other productions, however there are clear links to other concepts that feature in genres such as horror. Oust noticeably the zombies and also the opening titles. The static sound found in old TVs used in-between clips often denotes an end of the world scenario.

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT?:

The narrative is linear, however in some sections the editing portrays some of it in a non-chronological order. But for the majority it is shown in a linear narrative because it is similar to a Horror film. The actor does not look directly at the camera lens because we are following a narrative film and therefore should not break the fourth wall and avoids a relationship between the audience and character. There aren't any direct references to other productions, however there are clear links to other concepts that feature in genres such as horror. Oust noticeably the zombies and also the opening titles. The static sound found in old TVs used in-between clips often denotes an end of the world scenario.

PERFORMANCE STYLE:

Throughout the video the character is lip syncing the song and occasionally dances. The character is not performing it to the audience though but is more performing it internally to himself, almost like singing/dancing in front of a mirror. Some of the dancing isn't too typical to the genre, although it is passionate - as shown with the reach out to the sky when on top of the car. Contrastingly from the Michael Jackson video the dancing is very simple although they share the same concept of dancing through a street walking through mayhem with/to be with a girl.

LINEAR, CLOSED NARRATIVE?:

The narrative is a linear narrative that is followed from one end of the street to the other. It is clear when relating the video to the lyrics the story that the directors are portraying. The main character is walking 'blindly' through 'hell' to get to a girl we assume he is in a relationship with but it is not certain that the love he feels for her is reciprocated. We almost get a sense that it is a closed narrative at the end but also we are left with many questions. The way the camera pans back and upwards on the door closing makes us wonder what happened when he went in her house, did he survive? Secondly, what happened to the rest of the world? Was it the rest of the world? Was everything resolved? But for he most part the story of the character was fairly closed at the end of the video.

LOOKING/MODE OF ADDRESS:

There are no attempts to address the audience in this video, the character doesn't look into the camera lens and does not appear in any on screen TVs or photographs. Thus keeping the relationship between the audience and character minimal in this sense. However, the audience can still develop a relationship with him as they may still relate to the story being told in the video.

STAR TREATMENT:

Throughout the video the main character is repeatedly in the centre of the shot and remains for the majority within the range of medium to close up in the shot. The actor playing the main character is not a band member and is also not a well known actor so he is not given anymore time on screen simply to promote the video.

AUDIENCE IN VID?:

It could be interpreted that the main character in this music video is a fan of the band as he has headphones on and dancing/lip syncing the lyrics. It could be someone who shares the emotions of the band but he is not a conventional fan of the band, often shown in live performance.

REPRESENTATIONS:

For the most part this video defies stereotypes for age and gender. For example, the older woman at the beginning of the video can be deducted to have brutally murdered the man on the floor in the living room. We can tell this because of the gun she is holding and the bullet wounds in the man's head. Contrastingly, the woman is also wearing very stereotypical clothes for a woman of her age. She is wearing loose trousers with a polo shirt. It is very much middle class middle age woman attire. Secondly, another way they avoid stereotypes is that the male main character is wearing make-up. He is wearing blue eyes shadow, this may be against the stereotype of men, however in Rock and Punk, this is not unconventional, many men wear make-up such as eye liner (also known as guy liner) and lipstick. The woman in this video appears to be a femme fatale character who is leading the main character on. She is using her beauty to 'drag him through hell' because she knows that he would do anything for him. It may be portrayed as a positive empowering thing for women, however it can also be seen as negative because it could potentially suggest that when women have the power over men they can take advantage.

PACE + ANY VARIATION OF PACE:

The intro begins with a very fast pace as there are jump cuts between scenes of violence, other gruesome images and the titles. Once again this will be another influence taken from the horror genre of film. However the first shot of the first 'scene' is around 20 seconds long as it is in slow motion and also a reverse pan. The shots following this are not as long but do range from 2-5 seconds which is still conventionally a long clip. This slows down the pace and matches the slow rhythm of the music. Continuing through the video the shots last around 2 seconds long which is more conventional for music videos as it suits a younger audience. Bring Me The Horizon fans are usually around the age of 18-30 so it makes logical sense to attempt to appeal to that audience. The shorter clips and fast pace editing keeps the attention on the video. This pace increases slightly during the chorus - some of the clips lasting less than 1 second. Finally, at the end of the video the pace returns to that of the first scene with clips lasting around 5 seconds and the last clip lasting about 8 seconds.

SHOT VARIETY + NO. OF SETUPS:

The shot variety in the video was limited. However, there were around 23 different setups. All the setups are either in the same street or in a house for a couple of shots. Also, there is a lot of use of CGI in the video so they did not have to spend too much time and money on creating props such as a crashing plane.

ESTIMATED NO. OF SHOTS:

112 shots in 4 minutes and 49 seconds. At the beginning and end there are less shots but during the chorus the shots are shorter and also therefore more frequent. The fast paced editing matches the fast pace of the chorus, similarly with the slow tempo of the beginning and end.
